SICILY. Syracuse. Deinomenid Tyranny, 485-466 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 24 mm, 17.34 g, 12 h), circa 480-475. Charioteer driving quadriga walking to right, holding goad in his right hand and reins in his left; above, Nike flying right to crown the horses with a wreath. Rev. ΣVRΑΚΟ-ΣΙ-Ο-Ν Diademed head of Arethousa to right, her hair drawn up at the back, wearing ribbon and pearl necklace; around, four dolphins swimming right. Boehringer 128 (V58/R88). Dewing 706 (same dies). Randazzo 286-7 (same dies). SNG Tübingen 639 (same dies). Beautifully toned and with a wonderful reverse. Struck from a slightly worn obverse die and with a minor flan fault on the obverse and a small scrape on the reverse, otherwise, about extremely fine.
